About the Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited
The Jeep Wrangler JKU — the four-door "Unlimited" version of the JK platform — became the best-selling Wrangler configuration ever produced. With a 116-inch wheelbase (21 inches longer than the two-door JK), the JKU offers dramatically more interior and cargo space while retaining full off-road capability. Powered by the same 3.8L V6 (2007-2011) or 3.6L Pentastar V6 (2012-2018), the JKU is the go-to platform for families who want a capable trail vehicle that doubles as a daily driver. The longer wheelbase also provides better highway stability and improved departure angles for overlanding setups.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a JK and JKU?
The JKU is the four-door "Unlimited" version of the JK Wrangler. The JKU has a 116-inch wheelbase versus 95.4 inches on the two-door JK, adds two rear doors, significantly more cargo space, and a longer rear overhang. Both share the same engines, transmissions, and transfer cases. About 96% of aftermarket parts fit both — the main exceptions are soft tops, bikini tops, and some full-length roof racks that are length-specific.
Is a JKU good for off-roading?
Yes. While the longer wheelbase slightly reduces breakover angle compared to the 2-door JK, the JKU excels at rock crawling, overlanding, and trail riding. The longer wheelbase actually provides better stability on high-speed desert terrain and improved approach/departure angles for many situations. With a 2.5-3.5 inch lift, 33 or 35-inch tires, and skid plates, a JKU is extremely capable on trails like Moab and the Rubicon Trail.
